The 2009 Christmas Bird Count in the Coves
Feb. 03, 2010On Dec. 19, a group of birders volunteered their time to contribute to the annual Christmas Bird Count by counting birds throughout the Coves Subwatershed over a 24-hour period.
The count got started shortly after midnight when some dedicated birders went out in search of owls and were rewarded with a close-encounter with an Eastern Screech Owl. The count reconvened early in the morning when a team of 9 birders embarked on a 7-hour, 8km hike through the Coves Subwatershed's highlands, lowlands, meadows and woods. Another volunteer contributed to the count by counting birds visiting the feeder in their Old South backyard throughout the day. Overall, the volunteers recorded 819 individual birds of 27 different species over the course of the day.

The observations gathered by the Coves team during the Christmas Bird Count were compiled with those of other London birders and will ultimately be compiled with observations from birders throughout the western hemisphere who all took part in this annual event.

Friends of the Coves Subwatershed perform two bird counts annually, the Christmas Bird Count in December and the Coves Spring Bird Count in late May. We can always use more volunteer birders to help out, especially feeder watchers. Birders of all experience levels are welcome to get involved. If you are interested, watch the event listings on this website for details or contact the office.
