About Us
Our Vision
Three interconnected ponds out there I see,
With clear water and submerged plants in thee.
Sunfish, turtles, and minnows are found,
Not too plentiful, but they are around.
The water flows slowly and continuously between,
Beneath the shady willows or cattails so lean.
Swimmers, boaters, and fishers are few,
But none fear the water so fresh and so blue.
The surrounding forest is composed of native shrubs and tall trees,
That yield in but a few places to wet meadows that please.
And all residents and visitors to London can easily access,
These natural wonders that the Coves continue to bless.

Mission Statement
We believe that the quality of life in our community is enhanced through the protection, conservation and wise stewardship of the Coves Subwatershed.
Objectives
The Coves Subwatershed Plan identified 59 recommendations for the protection, rehabilitation, and stewardship of the Coves Subwatershed. These recommendations can be categorized into four main focus areas:
- Public Access: enhance community enjoyment and appreciation of the Coves by bringing more lands into public ownership and by establishing trails;
- Stewardship: engage local landowners in adopting ecologically-friendly practices in their home and yard;
- Rehabilitation: enhance aquatic and terrestrial habitat and establish nature corridors that connect with neighbouring watersheds;
- Ecosystem Education: the active involvement of area schools, community groups, and service clubs in ecosystem conservation and protection.
Board of Directors
Thom McClenaghan, President
Thom continues to be a lifelong resident of South London. He is a retired School Principal and former Trustee with the Board of Education for the City of London.
Thom is married to Martha with 4 children David, Erin, Kathleen and Andrew and two Grandsons Thomas and Samuel.
Why the Coves?
"This long neglected part of South London is long overdue for a little tender loving care. Possibly my grandsons will be able to enjoy them as I did when I was a child!"
Nan McIntyre, Chair
Nan has lived in the area for over 40 years. She is retired from her nursing position at the University Hospital.
Familiar with Euston Park early on as the place where her kids went tobogganning, Nan explored The Coves further after her neighbour Thom McClenaghan approached her on the subject of protecting it. Standing on the hill in what is now Basil Grover Park (at Wharncliffe and Commissioners) looking down over the area, Nan was amazed at how large it was and how much forest it contained and was moved to do something to protect it.
Nan feels it is important to get people out to explore and enjoy nature; to stop and observe rather than hurry along. She feels that birding is a therapeutic exercise that everyone could benefit from. Nan wants to see a trail network to help people access The Coves so that they can experience and appreciate it for themselves. Then they will naturally feel respect and ownership of it and be moved to protect it.
Michael Watson, Treasurer
Eric Shepherd
Eric Shepherd Born in London, Dr. Eric Shepherd is a surgeon and urologist at Victoria Hospital. He has lived in Old South for 35 years.
Eric is married to Bev and has three children and five grandchildren and is celebrating his 40th wedding anniversary this year. A simple conversation with neighbour Thom McClenaghan led him to find his way to a position on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Coves.
He puts it this way:
"I have been increasingly aware of the pressures of urbanization on our surroundings and now realize the need to identify the activities which lead to the degradation of our environment. It is also important to become part of the solution. The Coves Subwatershed is one area where we hope to bring problems and solutions together. There is now a formal plan with a solid scientific basis, and municipal and provincial support which we hope will result in restoration of the Coves environment. We are working to achieve enhanced access so the public will feel welcome to come and appreciate this marvelous preserve in the heart of the city."
