The Annual General Meeting of Friends of the Coves Subwatershed

On Saturday, May 2nd, the Friends of the Coves Subwatershed gathered at Landon Library for our Annual General Meeting. Director Nan McIntyre opened the meeting by welcoming the roughly two dozen Friends in attendance and making a special thank you to project sponsors and partners from the past year.

Elections were held in which Directors Gary Kay and Eric Shepherd were reelected to the Board each for three-year terms.

Director and President Thom McClenaghan gave a summary of several exciting additions that have been made to the Coves Public Greenspace network in the past year. This includes the acquisition by the City of London of 6 adjacent properties along the East Pond shoreline totalling more than 4 hectares (10 acres) and another property containing wooded slopes highly sensitive to erosion in Southcrest Ravine. Thom also reported on a 1.6 hectare (3.9 acre) City-owned property at 201 Wharncliffe Rd. S (at Elmwood Ave.) that was rezoned from Commercial to Open Space.

Jaclyn Goodwillie (Rehabilitation Project Manager) and Will Lyons (Community Involvement Coordinator) gave a summary of project and outreach activities that were carried out in the past year. Highlights included the Pollutions Solutions program which focused on water pollution caused by runoff and included educational components (a workshop and displays) and on the ground work (a demonstration Rain Garden and shoreline rehabilitation work). As a new outreach initiative, a series of Species-of-the-Coves bookmarks was developed to increase awareness of local flora and fauna. Other topics included ongoing forest naturalization, the Annual Coves Clean-Up and Swallowtail Grove, our community butterfly garden.

The meeting closed with an open discussion on various topics raised by attendees and the enjoyment of coffee generously donated by The Little Red Roaster.
