1st Ever Coves Spring Bird Count!
Project: Coves Spring Bird Count
The morning of Saturday May 23rd was the perfect day for the Friends of the Coves Subwatershed's first ever Spring bird count.
Eager birders met in the parking lot of the German Canadian Club at 9:00am and were welcomed by a gaggle of Canadian Geese in the East Pond.
The main group of birders walked trails along the South, West and East Ponds and through adjacent wooded areas while another volunteer single-handedly counted birds in Highland Woods, Euston Park and Southcrest Ravine.
We counted over 60 different bird species including gems like the Green Heron, Eastern Meadowlark, Great-crested Flycatcher and Wood Thrush.

Conducting a bird count in the Spring allows us to see non-resident, non-breeding birds that are simply migrating through the area and using it as a pit stop on their way to northern summer ranges.

The Friends of the Coves Subwatershed hope to make the Spring Bird Count an annual event. Thanks to all who helped make the first one a success!
