Yellow Fish hit the streets

Project: Yellow Fish Road

On Tuesday, June 2 a class of grade 12 students from Nancy Campbell Collegiate Institute got out to spread the word about stormwater pollution.

The students brought the Yellow Fish Road program to Askin St., Euclid Ave. and Byron Ave. E.  They spent an afternoon painting yellow fish with the words Rainwater Only beside storm drains then visited the homes nearby to deliver door-hangers with information about surface runoff pollution and the Yellow Fish Road program.

The goal of the Yellow Fish Road program is to spread awareness about surface runoff pollution and the role we all have to play in it.  Though often overlooked, we are all connected to our waterways through the underground network of storm sewers. These sewers are meant to carry natural runoff (rain and snow melt) but unfortunately that runoff often also contains harmful pollutants (such as gas, oil, salt, chemicals, pet waste, yard waste, sediment, pesticides and fertilizers).

The Coves Subwatershed is over 700 hectares (or 1700 acres) and runoff from every home, business or other property within the Coves Subwatershed flows to the creeks and ponds of The Coves.  Those same creeks and ponds are home to dozens of species of fish, birds and other animals.

Do you live, work or play in the Coves Subwatershed???
