A January thaw
Unseasonal conditions over the past weekend have resulted in hazardous conditions near waterways. Shorelines are wet and slippery, ice has weakened or melted away completely and creeks are full of icy, fast-flowing water. Even ice that still may look safe in the Coves ponds will have weakened from the recent combination of rain, above zero temperatures, and fast-moving water below the ice.
Parents should remind their children of the risks of playing near open water. It takes only a second to slip in and water temperatures are cold enough to result in potentially life-threatening hypothermia.
